Soundproofing, noise control, sound insulation or isolation are all ways of manipulating sound in a given space. As with the source of the noise, the results of the installation can vary wildly.
So why is it that two people can have access to the same tools and materials but come up with entirely different results? Knowledge. That is the key. Understanding the fundamentals of sound and how it converts this energy is something a joiner or builder will not be able to assist with. Firstly, lets consider what sound is. Sound is energy that bounces around the molecules in air, water or any other material at a given frequency which then makes contact with our little ear drums. This energy is then converted in to an electrical signal and sent to our brain to digest the information. Simple, right? Well, not really. This energy, before being transmitted to out ears can come from anywhere. Airborne noise is where your joiner/builder may by chance be able to help you as adding mass to the area between you and the noise will have an impact on the amount of energy that eventually reaches your ears. Although the actual frequency range, level etc… will not be considered by these trades, it is fair to say that the flying by the seat of your pants approach will make some difference. Impact noise is a different animal altogether, and as much as a professional will be able to achieve a better result with airborne noise than a joiner/builder, having a successful result with impact requires the knowledge of an expert. Period.
Impact noise is where the sound travels through a solid surface like a floor or wall, and not just through the air. This requires mass, isolation of the area and understanding of what the sound source is, the frequencies involved and calculating the best way to reduce the travel as there are lots of products and materials on the market. All have a different use and there are hundreds of combinations to tackle the problem. Sound travels better in a solid object than it does in the air because the molecules are closer together and it requires less energy to bounce them off one another. Next time you are in the bath, pop your ears under the water and tap the side of the bath with your fingernail. It’s pretty loud, right? That is what is going on here as the water molecules are closer that air molecules, so the sound is carried very well.
